Lighting a candle may seem simple, but doing it well—with care and intention—makes all the difference in how it burns, how long it lasts, and how safe it is. Here’s a guide to help you master the art of candle lighting:
Make sure your candle is on a flat surface and away from air vents.
How to Light a Candle Properly
1. Trim the Wick First• Always trim the wick to about ¼ inch before lighting. This prevents high flames, soot, and uneven burning.
Trimming the wick helps extend the candle’s life and ensures a clean burn.
2. Choose Your Lighting Tool
Matches or lighters? Use a long lighter or match to avoid burning your fingers. A long lighter is a simple but brilliant tool—especially when you’re dealing with deep jar candles where regular lighters or matches just can’t reach without a finger singe; or when relighting candles that have burned down.
It’s one of those small upgrades that makes a big difference in comfort and control.
